Lisa Paul

Small business owner

I own a small typesetting business. Although it has been successful, it is the first business I have ever run, and there have been times when I just wasn’t sure how to deal with different situations that arose. Jim has been extremely helpful in helping me to step back and think about the situation objectively. He listened to the problems I was struggling with, and offered me suggestions that I hadn’t even thought of. Although he was caring, he was also practical and no-nonsense about helping me with employees and other issues that require the “human touch.” He was very perceptive, and sometimes led me to realize that there were underlying issues that needed dealing with that I didn't even see. He also helped me to stay on track when I felt like I was trying to go into too many directions at one time. He has been a real help to me in keeping my business running smoothly and effectively.

But, Jim has also been there for me personally, as well. He has given me new insights and perspectives into relationship issues that I was struggling with, and would listen and be nonjudgmental, no matter what the problem was. I always felt like I could talk to him, and that he cared about what I had to say. He has a warm heart, but also a very analytical mind that has often provided me with a whole new way of looking at things.

Jim has been a help to me in all aspects of my life!

Jim Huether and I shared some interesting experiences when we were young engineers and office-mates at Atari.  A crazier and more chaotic work environment would be hard to find -- no one quite knew what the rules were there (because there weren't really any rules), and Jim and I discussed the situation frequently.

That Jim is a natural leader can be gleaned from the fact that we elected him president of our little social club -- you had to have designed games for Atari and never made any serious money from it to be allowed into this club, and Jim understood and enjoyed the cockeyed humor in the spirit it was meant.

Jim was a good sounding board when we discussed technical issues, and we got along
perfectly smoothly while sharing an office for a few years.  After three decades in Silicon Valley, Jim has seen a lot of work situations and his experience might be quite useful to someone trying to learn the ropes in the high-tech or other similar industry.

Jim has also helped me with some sound advice to help me through a specific relationship crisis. He told me I would be going through an emotional rollercoaster and to remember that image every day. Just recalling that image almost every day really helped me keep things in perspective during that difficult time.

I had two sessions so far with Jim Huether. The first session was in person and the second was online. I found Jim to be open and very perceptive. He listened to what I had to say, and provided very good questions for me to think about, as well as suggestions for next steps for me to take. Though I was a bit nervous at first, the session turned out to be very comfortable. On the very first session I received some very good suggestions and some reasonable action items for the next session. He also helped put things into perspective for me and helped me prioritize my issues.

I initially had two main issues I wanted to discuss with Jim. The first was a life issue relating to a personal relationship. Jim listened carefully and asked questions that helped me see what the real issues were. He then gave me some very useful suggestions as to how to start dealing with my issues in a step-by-step way. He was very understanding and obviously knowledgeable in this area.

My second issue was related to a dream I had about starting a new business. Jim again asked some very good questions that made me think about how to stop procrastinating and take some useful steps to help me determine whether this business dream would make sense for me. Since the next steps he recommended would take at least two weeks, we decided to just check on these the next week and make sure I was making some progress and was on track. I admit I had not done as much I had hoped even in the first week, and Jim’s follow-up on this gave me renewed incentive to make better progress in the following week.

I now clearly see the issues I need to work on and I know the steps to take, and it is invaluable to have Jim available to follow-up and provide support and help keep me on track in a way I can handle. I look forward having Jim as coach as I move ahead with both of these matters.

More to come…..
